Episode Summary

The Black family travels to visit Catherine's parents in Maryland. Catherine's father asks Frank to look into an old local case that may have been resolved improperly the first time around. The murder in question may have in fact been committed by the Woodsman, a serial killer still depositing bodies in the Maryland woods. In investigating these events, Frank might inadvertently be pulling his family closer toward the intentions of the Polaroid stalker.

And now there is merely silence, silence, silence, saying All we did not know." (William Rose Benet)

It was nice to finally see the romantic, family-oriented side of Frank in this, the first season finale. This contained the scene that stood out in all 3 seasons for me, as Frank and Catherine stand together in her parent's house, and Frank says, "I like being away with you. Makes me feel kinda naughty." To which a shocked Catherine replies, "In my parent's house?" Frank then teases her with "They still don't know?" This tender, flirtatious scene was a welcome diversion from the usual horror of the show.

We saw the two extremes of family relationships here. Pure love between Frank and Catherine and total dysfunction between all the other families. The mystery in question of this episode seemed almost secondary to the picture being painted around Frank and Catherine. It was obvious this was leading to something tragic. At the same time that we're seeing the spotlight on their relationship, Millennium accomplishes the balance it is famous for, balancing the beauty and purity of that relationship with the horror of the murders, and the terrible relationship between Henry (the killer) and his mother, who, by the way, was the most outrageous and memorable characters of the first season!

As the tone of the music changes at the airport, it signals the change that is coming. Frank discovers the Paper Dove, something so innocent that makes him realize his worst nightmare has come true. Nothing will ever be the same.
