Alex Glaser's Millennium Character Profile
The character of Alex Glaser, the 18 year old boy who changed his name to Alex Ventoux and left his family for an adventure in Alaska, was inspired by the real life story of Chris McCandless, whose real life story of life, passion, the quest for freedom and inspiration, and eventual death spawned the book Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer.
Alex had travelled with his parents and younger brother Ian on an Alaskan cruise a few years earlier, though he was changed by this experience in a way that was unknown to his family. As he went through the motions of his day to day life after this, he knew, deep down, that his life was "an incredibly realistic simulation", and that there was only one thing he could do to feed the yearning of his heart. He had to go back. A brilliant honor student, accepted into an Ivy league school, he persuaded his parents into letting him go back to Alaska, alone. There, he gave away his belongings to local people, spent a lot of money to buy a telescope for the local elementary school....to "atone for the brother he left behind", and vanished into the woods. There, his adventure almost came to an end, as he fell and broke his leg, also breaking the skin and losing a lot of blood. He spent what he thought would be his last days, writing in his journal of his feelings, his beliefs, and his love for a family he thought he'd never see again. It was then, while admiring the Aurora Borealis for what he thought would be the first and last time in his life, that Frank Black found him.
"I didn't want to die. I wanted to be alive." Were the only words we ever saw Alex speak, the rest being done in voice-overs, reading out his journal entries that would have inspired even Chris McCandless.
After being rescued by Frank, and handed off to Peter and several local searchers, Alex is taken to the local hospital and treated for his injuries. He does more writing in a journal he leaves in his hospital room, so that it will go back to his parents, and he, again, vanishes.
Frank takes the journal to Alex's parents, and tries to explain him, and his passion, to his parents, who are too blind to see the brilliance of their gifted child. If Alex ever returns home, he will not be the same man they knew...or that they thought they knew.
Alex is an inspiration to anyone who feels out of place in the world, and who longs to just turn their back on everything....and feel peace. In his misadventures, he even helps Frank see more clearly that The Millennium Group is not what he thought, and in so doing, enables Frank to become more of an individual. It is comforting to think that Alex is still out there, just as Frank is, seeking the truth and inspiration.
