"O Lord, if there is a Lord Save my soul, if I have a soul.--"

The music sets the tone for this intensely emotional episode. This was, in my opinion, the most perfect blend of beauty and innocence with horror and death of the entire first season, if not the entire series! I remember when I first saw this, and was swept up in the mystery and drama of this story. The identity of Angel, Maddie's baby, was painted as such a mystery, as we, the viewers, were forced to try to deduce the identity of this unseen character solely through the heart-felt words written by his mother, and delivered as heart-breaking voice-overs, throughout the episode. Frank believed that these letters must be to her father....who had left at an early age, but it is finally revealed that "Angel" is the "Innocent", the beloved baby boy which seemed to be surrounded by nothing but tragedy and death, as Maddie struggled to find him, with the help of her headstrong boyfriend, Bobbie.

The most heart-wrenching and symbolic scene to me was where the old couple were murdered in their home by the hot-blooded Bobbie, while the family dog barked outside. The murders are not shown. All that's shown is Maddie's reaction to the sound of gunfire, as she jumps in horror, then the camera pans to the dog, who sits on the porch, barking franticly....until the last shot is fired, and the screams of his family grow quiet, when he then sinks to the ground, with this mournful whine, realizing his masters are dead, and her head bows in sorrow. Tears spring to Maddie's eyes at this sight, as they do to mine, as this emotional touch is never lost on me.

"All for the love of her child", Frank said, pondering the trail of blood left in the pursuit of her beloved son, Angel. As the saying goes, "If you love something, let it go." Maddie finally learns this lesson, as she realizes that her baby deserves the life he has now, and that he is better off with his new family, and after all her suffering, she gives him up, and then finally kills her boyfriend to protect him. This was one of the most beautiful, dark, artistic episodes of Millennium ever, in my opinion.
