Episode Summary

Frank Black, for the third time in his life, ends up on the receiving end of a series of disturbing Polaroid photographs. This time, however, he begins questioning his own sanity, for the digitally enhanced photos depict the victim of a horrible drowning accident and the face in the Polaroids is his own. Is a ruthless demon seeking to push him over the edge into madness? Frank's painful childhood memories and the FBI's opinions that he is a crazed man make it all the more difficult for him to confront the evil attempting to ruin him.

This is what it's all about. A truly excellent episode to cap off a fine batch of Season 3 episodes. There is a remarkable feeling of coming through a journey with Frank Black, reflecting where he's been over the years and bringing him through to a new spiritual place. This kicks off right from the start with a return to the Polaroid motif which is great to revisit, and it's the perfect vessel to explore the psychological torment and potential breakdown of Frank.

The notion that Frank may be sending these taunts to himself is intriguing and torturous, while touching on his therapy tape from the beginning of the year and the death of Catherine roots the frightening possibility in existing continuity. Meanwhile, the character of Boxer drives through the narrative with some great dialogue, and the morph into Mabius cements him as another harrowing facet of Legion.

The entire episode is filled with delicious horror set-pieces, from the childhood drowning, through to Emma being buried alive, to the awesome final sequence in which Frank is trapped in the rapidly-flooding bathroom. The visual montage of past scenes from the series combined with more abstract images also does well to elevate this to a truly monumental occasion. Add it all together and you have an episode that is without a doubt one of the crowning jewels in the entire series.
