Profile

Ernest Lenart (born November 8, 1912 in San Salvador; died January 6, 2005 in Berlin), actually Joseph Ernst Lewy, also called José Ernesto Lewy, was a German actor.

Lenart attended Max Reinhardt's acting school at the age of 16 and then played theater in Konstanz, Magdeburg, Kiel and Berlin.

In 1933 Lenart came to the Jewish Cultural Association in Berlin. At its opening he played the Templar in Nathan the Wise. Because of the sharp increase in anti-Semitism, Lenart emigrated to the USA with his parents in 1936. There he played for over three decades on various stages, but also in International Squadron alongside Ronald Reagan, alongside William Holden in the American television film 21 Hours at Munich about the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games, alongside Richard Burton in the multi-part Wagner and in one episode of the American mystery series Millennium starring Lance Henriksen.

Lenart was still giving readings at the ripe old age of 90. His last film appearance was in the 2004 Israeli production Walk on Water.

Ernest Lenart was the son of the merchant Hugo Lewy and Rosa, née Freund. Both originally came from Breslau. Lenart's father, who was already working in San Salvador, returned to Germany to marry Lenart's mother Rosa in Schöneberg in January 1912. Both then left for San Salvador where Ernest was born 10 months later. After the First World War, the family returned to Berlin-Schöneberg. His paternal uncle was Wilhelm Lewy.

In 1947, Lenart married Renata Oppenheimer, the daughter of the sociologist Franz Oppenheimer, with whom he remained married until his death. The two had two children together, a son and a daughter. The son Frank Lenart works as an actor, screenwriter and voice actor.
