Episode Summary

Frank Black and Peter Watts begin the hunt for two escapees from a women's prison who used brutal force to gain their freedom. Certain evidence leads the two Millennium Group investigators to believe that one of the women has somehow gotten herself pregnant and that she is running under the belief that this is an immaculate conception. It's up to Frank to find them before the thoughtless and blunt state police do, and to prevent what could be a disastrous child birth.

Virgin Birth

The prize for most emotionally affecting scene most certainly goes to this one, from In Arcadia Ego. The old heartstrings are really tugged hard, as we breathlessly watch Janine try to deliver her baby. But, while this is well-done, the genius of the scene is in its finale. We have the rug pulled completely out from under us as both of the women who we have been pulling for so hard wind up dead. The long shot of Frank in the boxcar, holding the baby, with Janine dead next to him, is brilliant. Part of the scene's excellence is derived from its author's great character-writing. Because he allows us to identify with these two women so well with good writing previously, making them real 3-D characters, we are all the more shocked when they are each killed. This is somewhat sentimental, something I don't usually go for, but it's pulled off so well here that it's actually made palatable.
