"This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, & yet no sign shall be given to it..." (Luke 11-29)

The hauntingly innocent music in the first scene at the wake of a teenage boy set a terrifyingly beautiful tone leading up to the climactic moment in which a grieving mother is dragged, screaming, into the grave of her son. The balance of beauty and innocence with violence and horror is depicted quite strongly in this opening scene to "Blood Relatives".

The next scene, with Catherine reading a bedtime story to Jordan, ending with the words, "You can always come home", mirrors the theme of the show, which is that of the longing for family, for home, and a sense of belonging somewhere, which is what drives the teenage boy, James, who is the focus of this episode. The words, "Stop Looking", once thought to be a message to police, were actually a message to this boy, from another man who was clinging to James as the closest thing to family that he had. His fear of losing this connection was driving him to kill anyone in his way. All of these elements made this not only a great story, suspense-wise, but also an extremely emotional one as well.

Catherine was much more involved in "Blood Relatives", enabling us to see deeply into the heart of James, as well as getting to know her better, as we see how deeply she loves Frank. At one point, she even says to Frank, "I don't wanna have to ask myself...Am I strong enough to be alone." To which Frank replies, "It's ok. Nobody is." This continues the theme of emotional connection prevailing throughout this episode. It is concluded in the final scene, where James, even after everything he'd just been through, was back to looking through the newspaper, searching the obits. to continue his obsession with attending funerals, undaunted in his quest to find the love of a family.

The intensity of emotion and the elements of horror and mystery, created by such a well written and well acted episode, in my opinion, makes "Blood Relatives" a gripping, engaging example of Chris Carter's television triumph, "Millennium."
