One of my favorite artists

Something interesting to look at since there are no juicy pin-up pictures of yours truly available at the moment: two paintings by one of my favorite artists, Hugo Simberg. The first one is The Wounded Angel (1903), and the second The Garden of Death (1896). Have a nice weekend!

One sunny afternoon

I can't believe it's been well over a month since the last entry - very sorry about that. It's been a busy summer so far, and it will continue to be like that until my vacation in August. However, my sweetie and I managed to spend a lazy afternoon on an island beside my hometown in June. I love the island, not only because it's beautiful but also because it's the place I used to spend all my childhood summers. I love the sea.

What's your favourite deadly sin?

Hieronymus Bosch was definitely one of the most imaginative artists of his time, possibly of all times. His personal style flavoured with dreamlike figures and visions never ceases to amaze me. Here's one of his (in my opinion) most fascinating works, The Seven Deadly Sins (c. 1480). It's a painted tabletop, currently in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. In the center there's the eye of God with Christ, and in the four corners are the "four last stages of life": Deathbed, Last Judgmen

Confidence

Something tells me that this month will be better than any of the Decembers since Millennium was cancelled. Already so many wonderful things have happened as we hope for the return of Frank Black, and I can feel it getting better day by day. It feels good to wait for Christmas, and especially the new year. I'm confident. I hope, I believe, I love. This picture was taken last weekend at the Turku Cathedral. If you look very closely, you can see two angels standing at the top of the stairs.

On the Day of the Dead

Today, like every year on the Finnish Day of the Dead, I went to the cemetery to light a candle on my father's grave. I took this picture on my way back home at about 4 pm; no wonder that the name of November is "deadmonth" in Finnish.

Just a few lines

Hi all, so far, as you can see, this is a mere skeleton of a blog. I've never had any, so I thought it would be nice to try this. Nothing fancy, but a few lines about my life every now and then (especially then). Maybe I'll add some pictures later, if not of moi, at least of my hometown which, in my opinion, is somewhat beautiful. I'm writing this at work, and I think I'd better get back doing the things they pay me for now (I work as a researcher in a museum, currently doing stuff with a

The Devil's got problems

As promised on a previous entry, here's one of the devil-themed works by Hugo Simberg. The title translates approximately as Poor Devil with its twins. Makes you chuckle doesn't it? I don't know how the artist wanted us to see it; maybe it's supposed to diminish the threat aspect of the Evil One? It also reminds me of what Father Yagher of Seven and One said: How can we know if there is such a thing as evil? We take it on faith as we accept God. But if we fear it, do we not misplace our fai

Never giving up

I'd like to share an incoherent thought or two on a subject that means a lot to me, as well as most of my fellow Finns. It's the concept called sisu. It means inner strength and perseverance. Please take a look at this Wikipedia article for more details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisu My life has never been easy but I'm still here, hanging on, sometimes sad and unhappy, but most of the time content and optimistic. "Against the wind", we say, when everything seems to fall apart around us

New technology

How can a person's face be grey AND porky pink at the same time? Well, you tell me, because that's how I looked on the photos taken with our new camera last weekend. Don't get me wrong, the camera is absolutely great, it's my face that needs some serious fixing. (And no, I will never post those pics here!)
