Confusion with transcript

Putting this out for all who are interested...answer at your leisure...

episode: "Beware of the Dogs"

scene: Frank and Catherine are talking just after Jordan runs up the steps to pet Benny...

CATHERINE: Um, Ann Watkins from work? She and Dave have separated.

FRANK: Really.

CATHERINE: Yeah. So Jordan and I are going to move in with them for a

while.

[Frank appears to be stunned by this.]

YET, if you listen closely to the diaglog in the episode and verify it with the subtitles, she ACTUALLY says the following:

Catherine: Um, Ann Watkins from work? She and Dave have seperated.

Frank: Really.

Catherine: yeah. So Jordan and I are going to move in with HIM for a while.

(Frank appears to be stunned by this)...

now, either the diaglog and the subtitles are wrong, or the transcript at The MillenniuM Abyss is incorrect...give it a listen...to my ears, she definately says HIM and not THEM...Them who? she only mentions two people, and are they seperated but living in the same house? Thats the only reason she would respond with "move in with THEM"....

On the DVD subtitles she says HIM.

I think I remember hearing this before - it's one of those things you swallow without questioning the first time in order to get on with the rest of the episode.

Blooper?

Yes, Megan probably flubbed her line and they just hoped nobody would catch it. I can't say that I ever caught that myself.

Does anyone know how to e-mail Megan or her agent? Maybe we should just have an astute member of TIWWA, like the Old Man, go straight to the source and ask if the line was intended to say 'him' or if it was a flubbed line.

The subtitles on my DVD (I've got Region 2 DVD's) say "them".

I don't think it would be strange; maybe Ann and Dave Watkins have a child or children, and the situation in their family might be similar to the situation in the Black family: the father has moved out. And Catherine and Jordan are going to move in with Ann and the kid/kids. If Catherine was going to move in with Dave Watkins, THAT would be strange, because one would assume that there should be at least some kind of serious discussion about it between Frank and Catherine at some point in the series.

However, it is implied that Catherine might have something going on with another man in MOTC; Frank is going to join Catherine in the church to watch Jordan's pageant, but the seat next to Catherine has been reserved to someone else, and Frank sits down at the back of the church. A moment later we see some guy take the place next to Catherine. After the pageant, when Frank meets Jordan and Catherine outside the church, we see a glimpse of that guy with Catherine. And someone has given Jordan a Danny Dinosaur! Also, a bit later Catherine says to Frank that "I know that things are changing for us".

DBSD - you stole my thunder...i had earlier thought of posting these exact same thoughts, but at the last minute decided not to "open a can of worms" by having them attacked as "reading too much into the scene, etc" I am so glad that at least you see it in a similar fashion as I... . If you also recall this particular scene, you will remember that when the gentleman sits next to Catherine, she glances nervously back at Frank who is sitting a few rows behind her..by his reaction it appears that he is caught by surprise...yes, i have thought for a long time that the entire scene we are discussing was fraught with bizarre implications...

Amazing.

I have the US (whatever the region is) DVD's but it wouldn't be the first time I've seen the wrong captioning or even abreviated captioning.

Yeah I was thinking 'them' might have refered to Ann's children too, but now ... it really IS a can of worms.

You all are amazingly smart people. I thought in "Beware of the Dog" that Catherine was referring to Anne Watkins and her children. But I can recall the scene in the church in MotC and I've always thought that Catherine had saved the seat next to her for Frank and it was just some rude guy who didn't take the hint. After all, Catherine is the kind of person who would encourage her daughter's father to be involved in Jordan's activities no matter what the state of their relationship. Mmm, maybe M&W wanted to introduce the idea that the separation between Frank and Catherine had become deeper than just Catherine wanting time to think.

I am with Libby on this one and the rude guy theorie. No way that M&W would have hinted that Catherine had a thing going on with some other guy. And if they did, if it was their intention, I've already said this, then it was just awfull character writing. Catherine would never do such a thing, not in a million years. By the way, there is an episode in season 2 where she says something like she is not living with her husband anymore but they still deeply love each other. IMHO you guys are seeing things that are not there. I remember a post from some weeks ago where someone stated that there were romantic feelings between Frank and Lara. I also disagreed with this. But once again, maybe the hints were there and I just did not notice them. But then again, if they were present it was just bad character writing. Anyway, I will rewacht MOTC again one of those days. Take care!
