I have a friend that asserts that suicides increase when the culture lessons the taboo on suicide and talks about them in terms of victims and social stresses. I wonder if this applies in this case?

I wonder if anyone could offer some information with regards to this truly tragic story.

I only just caught a news report yesterday evening about a young boy in Yorkshire who was found hanging after recently becomming 'obsessed' with the Bridgend hangings. It was torture to see his Mother talk of him on television but sadly I was too late to catch the young chaps name nor can I find any further information on it.

I've also heard in conversation that Facebook appears to have some connection to the case though my friend could not elaborate greatly and wondered if anyone knew anything of this?

I was literally just a few sentences into your link when Sky News announced that a 15th victim has died in Bridgend in addition to the Yorkshire death yesterday.

I truly am speechless - it's simply too horrible to process.

I add this post somewhat nervously as I worry that it may appear sensationalistic and not display my profound sense of respect and for all those touched by this unfathomable sequence of tragedies. I wish to express that I have only chosen to add updates to this as I search for an outlet for something that troubles me greatly and that as something is critically 'wrong' here I believe it needs to be recorded.

Sky News have anounced another death literally hours after the last one. Kelly Stephenson cousin of Nathaniel Pritchard the 15th victim of these tragic events has now taken her own life.

I am sure our thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those touched by her death and may God afford the good people of Bridgend a swift resolution to this most distressing peroid in their lives.

Eth....Tragic, absolutely. Who knows why so many follow "cult" behavior. We will probably know more in time and yet, it still wont explain the reasons. Check out the 2nd link i posted. This was BIG, BIG news here in the U.S. for some time as it occurred in a million dollar home in San Diego and one of the most the unique thing about all 38 victims were the pictures from the scene showing 38 pairs of feet clad in brand new Nike shoes...the link i have provided is to their website as it was before their passage..

Dearest friend,

I read the whole of your link and was rendered senseless by the horror of it all, one can only imagine the depth of psychological and mortal anguish that forced these souls to base their very existence on a creed of such psychedelic nonsense. The loss of a single existence to such a purportless abberation is tragic but the loss of thirty eight lives is unfathomable.

I pray that the psychological and social services of Bridgend identify a similar cultish lunacy here, they need a demon with which to wage war but seventeen young lives later it seems they cannot identify a commonalty on which to base a multi-disciplinary response.

It wasn't an age ago that I was a youth myself but with all the hallmarks of Methuselah I feel like a dinosaur that cannot comprehend their reaction to the world they live in or the stressors they withstand - it seems so alien to me.

My apologies for such brooding posts but I have an aversion to human suffering and an all enduring hope that all this ends soon.

As bad as the cult suicides discussed above were, in my opinion they fall far short of the sheer horror and bewilderment one feels when you view the various pieces of film about the Jonestown massacre (the Jim Jones followers that had gone to South America). Although I don't have any quick links to web sites with history of this event, I'm sure it's well documented on the web as well. There was at least one TV movie made about Jones, the cult and their terrible end. Powers Booth played Jim Jones...and played him so believably that Booth was hard for me to accept in other roles for a time afterward. As chilling and depressing as the dramatization is, it skims over a lot of details that either weren't appropriate to depict on TV or were too time-consuming for the alloted run time. The truly depressing and chilling depiction is the documentary film shown on PBS which relies on a significant amount of actual film of Jones both in the US and in South America, including film from the ambush of the US Congressman who had gone down to see Jonestown for himself after receiving complaints from his constituents. It's one thing to hear FX gunfire and another to hear real gunfire in news footage and see the victims fall. The documetary also included extremely graphic descriptions of many events from eyewitnesses, either cult members who refused the cyanide laced Kool-Aid or investigators who went in after the massacre. I can't remember the exact loss of life now but it was many times the Heaven's Gate number.

X-Files fans might realize that the climax of the "The Field Where I Died" episode, which guest-starred MM's own Lara Means (Kristin Cloke), incorporated both the Jonestown poisoning and the Branch Davidian resistance to FBI entry to the compound.
