I read about this on the Fox News website and dismissed it initially as a misdiagnosis. But wikipedia (which I tend to trust far more than most news websites, at least for the scientific stuff) says: "Water, regardless of its salt content, will damage the inside surface of the lung, collapse the alveoli and cause pulmonary edema with a reduced ability to exchange air. This may cause death up to 72 hours after a near drowning incident." So it's the effect of the water on the lung tissues that causes the oedema that can result in death, rather than swallowing the water which would affect the stomach.

I wonder how many parents/carers are now going to be anxious about letting their kids swim at all, or tell them to keep their mouths shut to avoid swallowing the water, which could make inhaling the water even more likely.
