Elders (Admins) Libby Posted March 8, 2012 Author Elders (Admins) Share Posted March 8, 2012 That video is really frightening. We do get tornados in the UK, but they are usually so tiny and of such sort duration that they rarely get noticed by the general public. It's only when there's damage that they get reported in the news. But when there are news reports here in the UK about US tornados, quite often some comments are along the lines of why the US don't build houses with bricks, because surely brick-built houses would easily withstand the forces of a tornado. Usually someone more knowledgeable responds by pointing out that (a) brick buildings are no safer than wood constructions, and (b) a ton of bricks being hurled about by a tornado is not a good idea. We (very fortunately) don't get situations that can destroy a local community, so it can be difficult for us to understand the emotional effect and appreciate the courage it takes to rebuild those houses and schools and communities. (There are exceptions to that, but they involve either bombings or rail/plane disasters, where there is often no sense of community, just some stranger who was at the same shopping mall or sat in the next seat on the train.) --------- On a completely trivial note: I have made improvements to my den. The shelving units arrived and I put those together and screwed the uprights to the wall. That did require actually finding the hand drill (I've never liked using electric drills) and doing guess-work in terms of verticality of the uprights and sawing some scraps for shims under the front edge of the uprights (because nothing in this house is square). And then there followed the transfer of books/videos from location A and location B to the new location C, which is of course never straightforward. And then my new computer chair arrived, and that took some effort to put together. But so far it all looks lovely. However, I seem to have injured the index finger of my right hand, so typing is a bit difficult at the moment. But if I need to hit that spammy button again, I'm sure I have another finger to do that. Libby"Humans need fantasy to be human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape." Elders (Admins) Libby Posted March 10, 2012 Author Elders (Admins) Share Posted March 10, 2012 Well, I tried out the paint samples. "Party Surprise" turned out to be more of a bright bubblegum pink which would be great if I were a 6-year-old Barbie fan. The other two seem to be variations on the theme of strawberry ice-cream. So, back to the drawing board. I think I'm overthinking this by trying to match the wall colour to other things I've got in this room. There is some red but also two shelving units that are pine, which have darkened over time to a more orangey colour than the very pale colour of the new unit. I think I'm going to go with Walkabout's suggestion of a muted, natural colour like a pale blue or pale green. After all, it's only me who spends time here, and I'm generally looking at a computer or TV screen or a book. So much of the wall space is taken up by either windows/door or bookshelves and if I really don't like the finished result, I can always just put up some pictures or posters to cover the rest of it. Earthnut
I'm excited, I really enjoy Mad Men, and the new season starts on the 25th. Elders (Admins) Libby Posted March 12, 2012 Author Elders (Admins) Share Posted March 12, 2012 I love those pictures of the lions and cubs. I know that animals in wild life reserves get used to the sight and sound of tourists and vehicles, but those cameras would have seemed very strange, and would have had human scent on them - but they weren't in the least bit fazed. Continuing the camera theme, but something completely different, here's a heart-warming video story by Mike Leonard (who I'd never heard of) of NBC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXKu-RrO3kw&feature=player_embedded I've never watched Mad Men, and thought that maybe it hadn't made its way over the UK. But a quick check on wikipedia shows that it has aired over here, and the new season will likely air on Sky Atlantic which is a channel I hadn't heard of (but it's only being going for just over a year). From the looks of it, Sky Atlantic is something of an equivalent to BBC America. I've just added that channel to my favourites, so it'll be interesting to see what shows get aired. At a complete tangent: here's what my son-in-law wrote on his blog about the significance of the staircase in drama. (Note: he's referring to British TV back in the past, when the set dec budget was probably about £3.67 an episode.) https://underthreehun...se-mystery.html Libby"Humans need fantasy to be human. model217
Speaking of Kiefer has anyone watched or is going to watch Touch. I heard somewhere that they already aired the first episode a while back and I missed it. From the promos it looked interesting.
