Gotham Gal
Though I have to admit @seesthru that I wasn't a huge fan of TNG's Wesley Crusher character. I don't know why. Deep Space Nine wasn't my favorite Star Trek series, either. Picard is hitting the proverbial nail on the head for me, though, I have to admit. Set up so beautifully, paced nicely, good serialization and characterization. Excellent.
seesthru
I thought the Wesley Crusher angle was strange. I didn't like or dislike it. But I do have to admit, I wasn't a regular viewer of the show. They all had a captain, and a bones, and a Spock figure. Data was Spock, Seven of Nine was Spock, Odo was Spock... I liked the shows, don't get me wrong, but.. Meh... as campy as the original was... often, you just can't replace Scotty, Spock, Bones, or even Kirk. Gotham Gal
That's true. Hard to replace original casts. I do admire good world creation in some of the better sci-fi series, including Star Trek. Character's really important, but the sandboxes that are built for them to play in can be enormously creative and enjoyable to watch.
seesthru
I did like some of the story lines, and some of the unique "pairings" in the different series. n the original, seemed like Kirk had the most relationships... but in the other series, they spread the love around, LOL! I really do like Picard, and though I wasn't a huge fan, I liked the episodes of the show that I did watch. The franchise is an old friend,it's nice to visit now and then. Gotham Gal
It's actually a very political show without it being apparent or obnoxious about it. I don't really like political stuff, but the subtlety in how it's done leaves me thinking sometimes, and that I do like. Here, for example, we see "synthetic life forms" being viewed in a way we might someday in the future view more sophisticated and humanized robots/androids. How human can they be? Should we give them "rights?" Is this how we want them to be? How we want to treat them? Etc.
Gotham Gal
I guess at this point I'm talking to myself about Star Trek Picard which finished its first season this week. (It was renewed for a S-2 early on.) Anyway, the season finale was poignant, showing just how character-driven they wisely chose to make it. Some really nice effects, too, if you're into that sort of thing.

seesthru
I haven't watched the last episodes yet. Was saving them for a binge night! I really do like it so far. I'll have to check out the political aspects. I did have to go back and watch a movie to see what happened to Data and get that part of the storyline. 2 "I smell blood and an era of prominent madmen" —W. H. Elders (Admins) The Old Man Posted April 1, 2020 Elders (Admins) Share Posted April 1, 2020 Well as a lifelong Trekkie, I was gutted that the TNG, DS9 and Voyager eras ended, I thought ST would run for ever, and I loved the work, the creative and thoughtfulness that was injected into them, especial Voyager and DS9 when they really got going. The rebooted movies are just terrible, they have no class, you can't buy into the characters who are just cold stereotypes and reflections of the originals. All special FX and no soul. So I was overjoyed to see the 2 new TV series announced. I recently binged on Star Trek: Discovery and I quite enjoyed it. I hope it gets a second series, its not perfect but the special effects are excellent and I was somewhat bewildered that the second half of the season was focused on the one thing I really disliked most about the other Trek shows, the inevitable alternate parallel universe crossover episodes where everyone good is bad, and bad is good. However I was more pissed off that E4HD don't seem to have shown the final episode, my Sky box recorded only 14 episodes and it's not on their catchup on demand service, All4. As for Star Trek: Picard, I watched the first four episodes last night. I do like what they're doing with it so far but it's definitely sad that Picard ended up alone and a recluse at the family vineyard. This is where the writing and creative of Star Trek differs from shows like The X-Files, in that why isn't he inevitably married and living happily with Beverly Crusher like Mulder and Scully were to in particular please the Shippers when we returned to their world after such a long time away. I think the scene where he walks into Starfleet HQ unnoticed by everyone outside and then the receptionist doesn't recognise him or react to his name at all was a great demonstration of how he was long forgotten by society. I also liked the brief dialogue about why he was calling on his old friends because he knew they'd drop everything and come running. Re DS9, if you judge and gave up on this series based on the first 2 seasons, that's a huge mistake. They were fairly dull, yes, but the rest of the series from season 3 comes alive, it introduced the mesmerising war with the seemingly unstoppable Dominion and also a return to war with the Klingons, featuring some incredible action sequences and thought provoking well written episodes about the battlefield and horrors and tragedies of war that really broke the mould. I urge you to revisit it. 1 Thank you for not contributing to the spread of fake or inaccurate content, speculation or false information especially in relation to current worldwide health events. seesthru
I finished it last night. I was surprised by the ending. I got of course the obvious points of the series, like what constitutes a person, and equal rights, things like that. If there were finer points, they were probably over my head. All in all I did like it. Spoiler But the woman who killed Maddox, was she ultimately let go? It' s like, she was going to turn herself in but later on, she's smoochy with the pilot. I get lost in watching shows, and I don't pick up the subtext very well. I just know, I liked this show, a lot! It had parts that were very relevant to today, like PTSD substance abuse issues, illness and how it can cause people to isolate, people trying to understand the struggles of others, and lots more. I did like how the synths were the hippies of that era! Edited April 5, 2020 by The Old Man Spoiler toggle added 2 "I smell blood and an era of prominent madmen" —W. H.
