Was at Bestbuy today and saw the complete first season collection of The Outer Limits..any fans here?

"There is nothing wrong with your television set, do not attempt to adjust the picture, we are controlling transmission, we will control the horizontal, we will control the verticle. We can change the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly, and we will control all that you see and hear. You are about the participate in a great adventure, you are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to....The Outer Limits.."

After a cursory viewing of a couple of episodes, i had forgotten just how well done most of the episodes were. Created at a time when the Cold War threatened to destroy us all, there is an underlying message of peaceful co-existence amongst many of the episodes. Then there are some, like the one i am currently watching called "The Man with The Power" which really set the tone for the entire series...the best i am able to explain is its the one where the man with the strange pattern in his forehead who, when he is unable to control his anger, it sets off a cloud of electricity that eliminates the source of his anger, all the while he gets weaker and weaker.

Anyway, anyone ever hear of "One Step Beyond'?

A lot of the long running remake series are absolutely brilliant. There are a few dull ones but the majority are excellent. There's even one with Sarah-Jane Redmond (Lucy Butler) in which I haven't seen yet from Season Five.

Don't tell me.... One step beyond is released on DVD???

*be still my heart*

I love Outer Limits! The early one, so much style and just the classic look of it. Fav was with David McCallum - forget the name of it.

If you get chance, next time see if "The man with the power" was written by Harlan Elison? My son's into him now and would freak if he knew that episode was on there.

Thanks,

Bonnie

Bonnie...Harlan Ellison wrote two episodes for The Outer Limits in the 60's. The first was "Demon with a glass hand" and "Soldier"..Laird Stewart wrote "The Man with the Power" Ellison also wrote an episode for the 1995 remake called "The Human Operators"

Now I remember him telling me  I didn't know about the remake though.

It's a fantastic series. Probably one my son willl collect. (so I get it too:) He works for Blockbuster and has gotten me a number of goodies.

I see One Step Beyond is available at Amazon.com

Unfortunately the reveiws say the quality is horrible due to the transfer from old syndacation prints that were cut, spliced etc .. for commercials. Some content is lost

Thanks 4H,

Thats the thing with the really old and classic DVD releases. I guess you have to trade that off against seeing a series again as you remember it. I guess only the big sellers get the full digital restoration as its expensive and time consuming.

I suppose. But not sure I would part with $80 for something like that. That series, Like Outer Limits got a lot of it's charm from the end commentary of the host.

John Newland sort of floated in and out, almost part of the story. I'd hate to see it jump from the middle of one of his beautifully done monologues to the end credits.

It would be like losing the moral - the signature at the end of the original Outer Limits.
