If you don't already own it, any MM fan should go out and buy Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" right now. This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. A lot of it reminds of season one, specifically "The Wild and the Innocent." The whole album was recorded by Springsteen on his 4-track with just a guitar and harmonica. I can't praise it enough. Much of Springsteen's work around this time was inspired by the movie "Badlands" about a killer named Starkweather...

Nebraska

I saw her standin' on her front lawn just twirlin' her baton

Me and her went for a ride sir and ten innocent people died

From the town of Lincoln Nebraska with a sawed off .410 on my lap

Through to the badlands of Wyoming I killed everything in my path

I can't say that I'm sorry for the things that we done

At least for a little while sir me and her we had us some fun

The jury brought in a guilty verdict and the judge he sentenced me to death

Midnight in a prison storeroom with leather straps across my chest

Sheriff when the man pulls that switch sir and snaps my poor head back

You make sure my pretty baby is sittin' right there on my lap

They declared me unfit to live said into that great void my soul'd be hurled

They wanted to know why I did what I did

Well sir I guess there's just a meanness in this world

Reason to Believe

Seen a man standin' over a dead dog lyin' by the highway in a ditch

He's lookin' down kinda puzzled pokin' that dog with a stick

Got his car door flung open he's standin' out on highway 31

Like if he stood there long enough that dog'd get up and run

Struck me kinda funny seem kinda funny sir to me

Still at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe

Now Mary Lou loved Johnny with a love mean and true

She said "Baby I'll work for you every day and bring my money home to you"

One day he up and left her and ever since that

She waits down at the end of that dirt road for young Johnny to come back

Struck me kinda funny seemed kind of funny sir to me

How at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe

Take a baby to the river Kyle William they called him

Wash the baby in the water take away little Kyle's sin

In a whitewash shotgun shack an old man passes away take his body to the graveyard and over him they pray

Lord won't you tell us

tell us what does it mean

Still at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe

Congregation gathers down by the riverside

Preacher stands with his Bible groom stands waitin' for his bride

Congregation gone and the sun sets behind a weepin' willow tree

Groom stands alone and watches the river rush on so effortlessly

Wonderin' where can his baby be still at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe

Hi

How about some Dead Can Dance for episodes with a mystical mood? They could be nice for creating some atmosphere.

Wow - great thread on a topic I've thought about many times...going to back in time a bit - to the 70's.

Blue Oyster Cult had a couple really sinister tunes on the "Secret Treaties" LP -

- "Harvester of Eyes"

- "Career of Evil"

Both capture the decadent evil undertones that permiated many of especially the S1 eps.

If anyone has heard these, you'll know what I mean!

live long & prosper

How much I love you

Please don't take my SunShine away!

For me, that song will always be tied to a certain non-door-stopper Doctor teaching to a certain ex-borg how to sing...

Aw, that's the song my daddy sang to me when I was little.  I have a Big Bird doll that plays it whenever you push his stomach, and he always watches XF with me and has ever since I got him (probably 4 or 5 years ago).  But I can see this song playing in an episode, probably sometime like in the beginning of "Monster".
