Guest MillenniumIsBliss Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Yep, I just got done watching Gehenna again. I hate to repeat myself, but as I watch these early episodes I can see why this series had me hooked right from the get go. As mentioned with the pilot, Frank's character is reminding me of myself in a way, and I don't say that to flatter myself. I don't have any of the skills or abilities that Frank has, there is a scene between Frank and Catherine that reminds me of myself as Catherine talks about Frank fearing a loss of control or things happening to people he knows. Things that he has no control over. I find myself thinking that way more and more, and I can see that a lot of the things that bother me are based on not having control over them, and the realization of what can happen to anyone at any time in this world of ours. I don't say that to be downbeat, I always do whatever I can to maintain my upbeatness (I'm a lot like Rocket McGrane in that respect), and I don't dwell on it the way someone like Frank might in his line of work, dealing with the kind of things he has to deal with, but episodes like this remind me of myself nonetheless. One thing that I was reminded of in Gehenna that I forgot about for some reason is that Frank seems to just be catching on to the "greater evil" theory as he makes comments like "I'm not sure the bad man can be caught" in Gehenna. For some reason I forgot about this and kind of thought that he more or less started off with this belief or point of view. I guess it just goes to show how much you can forget in a year or two. By the way, who gives the ratings in the Millennial Abyss? Don't get me wrong, I respect, and generally agree with them for the most part, but Gehenna is given a 3 out of 5 in the Abyss, and I think it probably deserves at least a 4 or 5, and personally, I would go with 5, or maybe a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. An interesting note: for some reason it occurred to me that the cult leader looked a lot like Peter's Millennium group pal in skull and bones, and a quick search of the Abyss confirmed this. They were played by the same actor. I kind of figured I would go into what is really only my second viewing of the S1 DVDs in their entirety, with a new perspective, and I would have to say I have, and there is already a lot of detail that I forgot from my initial viewing. Season 1 is off to such a great start that, for a brief second, I had to start to reconsider S2 as my favorite, but I know deep down inside that, in the end, S2 will always come out on top.

MIB...you are a person after my own heart...i have ALWAYS considered Gehenna to be one of the best MillenniuM episodes EVER....I hate to be redundant here, but the scene where as Catherine is putting Jordan to bed, she notices the outside flood light go on, then as she is looking out the window, you see a quick shadow flash across the light. Then when she goes downstairs to close the drapes the camera angle is such that it makes it appear that something or someone is watching her from behind the bushes...that scene STILL gives me chills.... Yes, Gehenna is most certainly to be considered nearly perfect in every dimension... 4th Horseman...
Guest Frank L. Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 I agree, for me too Gehenna is one of the best MM episodes ever. I'd even give it a 10 out of 10. The atmosphere is just brilliant. It's dark and brooding. And Gehenna probably dropped the first hint of other-worldly evil. One of the scariest episodes.

Yes, I know the scene you are talking about, and with all the talk about the writing and acting, many times the director and other people behind the scenes, making it all work, go unnoticed. This scene is another example of how everyone involved in the project was at the top of their game.
vain68 Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 Some of the Abyss' ratings seem off kilter to me, this being one. Vv
HighPlainsDrifter Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 yes i am surprise that Abyss ranked Gehenna 3 out of 5. THis is one of my fav. eps in Season 1
Guest MillenniumIsBliss Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 Some of the Abyss' ratings seem off kilter to me, this being one. Vv Yes, I agree, I am not a super huge fan of "The Judge", but I would give it a solid 4 out of 5, and the Abyss gives it only a 3. Also, it gives "Kingdom Come" 3/5, "Broken World" 3/5, aghh, this is a crime "Beware The Dog" 2/5??, "19:19" (pretty good in my book) 2/5, "A Room With No View" 3/5, "Exegesis" 1/5 (waaay too harsh). All these deserve better in my opinion, and maybe a few others as well. At least the Abyss seems to be pretty consistent with scores that are too low, and rarely scores that are too high. I guess it is all objective though, maybe the writers of the Abyss don't think a 3 out of 5 is that bad.
