Holes- Movie Review.

It's disney - right? ya would think that Disney would have at least a family oriented movie? but no. Sex. Gun battles and a woman who commits suicide.Long time ago, there was a man named something or other Yelnats and he fell in love with a girl, and she was going to be married off to a man who was going to give her father the bigest pig. well he went to a wize woman who gave him a little pig and told him to carry the pig up the mountain to a stream and let the pig eat and drink and the pig would grow strong, and when he did, he was to return and carry her up the mountain to drink and sing and she would be strong, but if he forgot, she would curse him...So you see where this is going. Yelnats went to the new world.Meanwhile, A school marm falls in love with a humble onion grower. The owner of the town is a real sleaze bucket, and after class he puts the moves on her. She rebuffs his advances, the sherrif sees her kissing the onion grower, and he kills the guys mule and catches up with him in his boat and shoots him dead.and it stops raining in the town...the school marm, Kate Barlow had tried to get the law to stop what was going on, but he refused. Several days later she shows up, asks him if he still wanted that kiss, and shoots him, THEN leaves a huge red lipstick kiss on him.It didn't make sense, before, why she was picking out who she did, but, it was the people who were rich, and would exclude people like the love of her life, or the hired hench men-those were her targets.Meanwhile Stanley Yelnats was walking home from school because a bully grabbed his homework and dumped it in the dunny, and he had to find it, and then he missed the bus, and as he went under a bridge shoes fell from the sky.famouse footwear, and he is caught, and senticed to 18 months at camp greenlake, which has no lake, and isn't green, and the young men dig holes. 5 foot deep, the width of their shovels. He gets beaten up a few times, and the warden is Sigorny Weaver, who's best line is "Excuse me?"Stanley goes after one of the kids whom he has befriended, and in the act, discovers a boat, that has peaches in jars, that have been sitting in the sun under the boat for 100 years... in the desert... Now, according to the story it turns into something - um - good enough to drink. Lemme tell you. it doesn't work that way, so don't try it at home unless you want a really skanky basement.Stanley saves the boys life, and they go back to dig just - one more hole where they find a small trunk, and the warden arrives with the other bad guys and the yellow spotted lizards come out of no where- and so does Stanleys lawyer, who said they discovered he was innocent the day before, and anyway, the warden calls him a theaf. cut to Kissing Kate Barlow, shes been cornered, and is dieing, and sees Sam, the love of her life, and he tells her, "I can fix that"and the owner of the now dried up lake is really upset. She sees one of her former students, and Kates revenge had been going on for 13 yrs.and she tells him none of his children will find it for 100 yrs. (which btw, is how long its been since it rained, but there is still trees...)and Kissing Kate grabs a lizard, talks nice to it and it bites her offered arm, and she dies.Really really bad message to send to kids, get revenge on those who hurt you and then kill yoursef. anyway Zeronie points out that the trunk that they dug up has Stanleys name on it, so, IE its his, and no goverment people step in to see how much is in the bag. the warden wants to see what is in it and begs him and he looks at her and says"Excuse me?" and gets in the car. Now, the foolish heart of a young man that brough a curse to his family for a long time has passed, but the kindess of his childrens childrens child breaks the curse- really. On Gods Thumb.i don't know the age for this movie, as there is violence, no real chicks, and while it trys to say, "you can love anyone were all the same inside..."blowing away those whom you don't like, really, isn't good things for kids to see...as for the end,the two kids made things right.and everyone, except the bad guys lived happily ever after with time served...Kath

This is actually a kid's book-well, more like teen...my daughter brought the book home last year in fourth grade, and I read it-she didn't. Then we saw that the movie was coming out, so she had to go read it then, of course. I really liked the book-I thought the concepts put forth were handled well. I can't say as much for the movie~I think they struggled a bit in relating the events.

I believe it was written by Lois Sacher, who writes quite a few books for the preteen/teen audience. I thought the book was excellent in relaying to this age group the heartlessness of those with prejudices. The movie just didn't have the magic or words of the book.

The book and the movie were written by the same person. they had a problem with casting and time because in the book Stanley started out chubby, and worked down to muscle. Now, I understand about interacial kissing a hundred years ago- and all, and they loved eachother- and all. For the most part the books are better than the movies- How did your daughter like the movie compaired to the book? I want to show it to my niece who is nine, but - her mother may have some objections to the suicide thing. (can't give her any reason to get upset at what we do.

Oh, Btw, My niece ate a WHOLE BEAN and she LIKED IT...

This is the same ex sister in law who went balistic and reported me to the court child welfare system because I suggested her daughter just try a single bean on her plate... She made it out that I was force feeding the child and its like Huh??

mums motto is, Try it, you may not like it, but you won't know unless you do.

builds character...

We both liked the book better than the movie, but Shelby adores the kid who played Stanley...he's on some show on Disney-the name escapes me right now. And that's a good motto to have...try it before you say you don't like it~Shelby is a good sport about trying stuff, if only once.

My ex sis in law is a nut. She informed my brother that she was *alergic* to dogs/ animals etc and then the courts, and tried to petition the courts with because of the alergie she didn't want my niece visiting my brother (he has a dog) riding in the truck with my brother (the dog goes with my brother in the cab in a harness) she informed her daughter that the reason why she wasn't going to be going to the family christmas party was A. I have ferrets, and there for she is alergic to ferrets, and B, her mother wasn't invited. Now, the court had said to her , family gatherings like the family christmas party was something she couldn't deny her child to go to- so, to hurt my brother, she pushed this on my niece that her mother wasn't invited, (I was being rude & it hurt her mother ) and that she would have an alergy attack with the ferrets.

I had the chance to find this out a month before the party, and informed my niece that ferrets are Hypoalergenic, they don't have dander, and they are one of the few pets that people wont have an alergy problem with, and It was MY party, and If my ex sis in law (her mother) wanted to come, she could, she was just as much invited as her daughter was and for her to tell her mother that if she didn't come, then it was her own fault, and not something she should hurt her daughter with (because she really wanted to come and see her cousins)

It was the last christmas party that we had my parents together. the following year, my dad developed lung cancer and he didn't make it to my birthday that year. She has taught her daughter a very bad diet habit, and it shows in her growth . My niece wouldn't know a veggie if it came up and bit her on the nose.

Its all a power struggle. It shouldn't have to be, because its only harming my niece. her actions are reprehensible, and I wish someday my niece will tell my ex sis in law, Babe, you are one Fucbed up Kitch.

I'm sure he wants to now, but in order to keep the peace, it's probably best he keep that comment to himself!! (At least until visitation and custody are finalized!) :oneeyedwinK

It took three years before he had the right to do overnight visits, and her lawyer wanted to do it later in the year because it would be too tramatic/ she was too young to be separated from her mother etc - (snort)

She wasn't scared or nothing. Hell of a thing to put in a kids head.

I will say, My niece is learning - that little things are good to give. I have a friendship bracelette that she made for me, and while its hanging on the bed post right now, I don't want it to ever wear out, you know? It is going in the scrap book next to the hand made card she made for me that has the L word on it- the only time she has ever said - Love- to me.

Someday... well, if I live to see the age that my brother doesn't have to pay child support, my niece is going to find out what her mummy dearest did to daddy.
