Millennium Trivia:

The Pilot episode of Millennium attracted over 17 million viewers when it premiered in 1996, the highest rating network premiere in history.

The address of the new home, commonly known as the Yellow House is 1910 Ezekiel Drive, Seattle, WA 98924.

Before it was to be known as Millennium, the show's working title was 2000. The Pilot episode is sometimes referred to as 2000 or The Frenchman after Elizabeth Hand's reconstructed novel.

Background Information and References:

Millennium Bloopers:

The sound crew added a 'starting up' car engine sound effect in post production to The Frenchman''s car when it was parked by the bridge marked Peste. However the engine could already be seen to be running prior to the sound effect; as displayed by the smoking exhaust pipe.

The Credits and Transcript for this episode refer to the stripper killed at the start of the episode as Calamity. However, when Frank Black picks up the newspaper from his porch, the article shows in its text and under the photo that the victim was Joanne Sandor, age 27.

Killers and Victims:

The Frenchman killed Calamity and an unnamed male.

The Frenchman was shot dead by Bob Bletcher.

Psychology:

Frank Black: The killer is confused about his sexuality. He feels guilt, quite possibly from his mother. So he goes to peep shows to try to feel something toward women but all he feels is anger - anger that fuels his psychosis, that distorts and twists his view of reality. [...] His way of dealing with [his confusion] is by fulfilling a prophecy.

Psychology:

Penseyres says other Millennium Group members recommend using the Holmes criteria - defining serial killers involving three victims with a period between murders of at least 30 days.

Frank: No sexual mutilation or intercourse with the victim. He defecated and covered his feces - a physiological release but embarrassed. Covered victim's face but not entire head - objectified her, wanted as much of his obsession visible as possible but couldn't have her looking at him, couldn't hear her fear - an indication of remorse, rare to have remorse for a stranger. Expects him to visit her grave, tell her how bad he feels.

Millennium Trivia:

This was the first episode to be aired out of production order. The reason given was that a senior Roman Catholic prelate, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, had died November 14, 1996, the day before it was due to air and was re-scheduled out of respect. However, others think this may have been a publicity ploy by Fox to bolster Millennium's falling ratings by putting it back in the news.

Psychology:

Frank: Calloway knew we were on our way. He didn't hurry. He didn't compromise the ritual. He was resigned, committed. He's become comfortable. You get the luxury of calmness in a murder when you know your surroundings.

The episode's title is taken from "The Ballad of the Long-Legged Bait" by Dylan Thomas. Among the quatrains included in the six-page poem is one that reads, "And steeples pierce the cloud on her shoulder / And the streets that the fisherman combed / When his long-legged flesh was a wind on fire / And his loin was like a hunting flame." The poem is known for its surrealistic metaphors concerning sex and sexuality and, as a result, the line chosen as the episode's title seems an apt means of depicting the fantasy-prone sexual mindset of serial killer Art Nesbitt.

Millennium Trivia:

Writers Glen Morgan and James Wong, like the show's other writers, clearly spent time researching the stories of real life serial killers. The conversation between Frank Black and Richard Alan Hance, which provides one of this episode's highlights, was directly inspired by famed FBI profiler Robert Ressler's interview with serial killer Edmund Kemper. Similarly, Jacob Tyler's delusions, in which he seems to believe his victims are volunteering themselves, were inspired by delusions professed by real life serial killer Herbert Mullin.

This episode marks the first occasion in the series, and one of a scant few, wherein Frank Black takes up a firearm. Both Chris Carter and Lance Henriksen were adamantly opposed to depicting Frank as a character who was willing to use guns or take the life of another person, regardless of circumstances.

The death cards seen throughout the episode serve as a means of delivering Glen Morgan and James Wong's trademark references to their work on the science fiction drama Space: Above and Beyond. Each playing card bears the insignia of Space's 58th Squadron along with their motto, "Expect no mercy." Each of the cards left by Jacob Tyler throughout the episode corresponds to the call sign of a character from that series.

At the end of the episode Frank Black shouts to Jacob Tyler, "You are not who you are!" The line is taken from The X-Files episode "Ice," also written by Morgan and Wong.

While there are occasional references throughout the series to the fact that Frank Black has a brother or brothers - most notably in "Midnight of the Century" and "Seven and One" - this episode marks the only appearance of one of these blood relations.

While there is foreshadowing throughout the first season, "Sacrament" grants viewers the first clear indications that Jordan Black has inherited her father's unusual powers of insight. This theme, and its potential ramifications, would be explored throughout the series.

The only proper names for angels provided by Scripture are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Other angelic names can be gleaned from various apocryphal sources, however. With a name literally translating to "poison angel," Sammael is known primarily as the angel of death, characterized in some instances as a figure representing "the severity of God."

The episode takes its title from Sammael's powerful invocation, which reference four of the nine orders of angels identified by Scripture: Seraphims, Cherubims, Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, Powers, Virtues, Archangels, and Angels.

Chernobyl accident

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chernobyl accident occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). It is regarded as the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. Because there was no containment building, a plume of radioactive fallout drifted over parts of the western Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, UK, and the eastern United States. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of roughly 200,000 people. About 60% of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus.

The accident raised concerns about the safety of the Soviet nuclear power industry, slowing its expansion for a number of years, while forcing the Soviet government to become less secretive. The now-separate countries of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus have been burdened with continuing and substantial costs for decontamination and health care because of the Chernobyl accident. It is difficult to accurately tally the number of deaths caused by the events at Chernobyl, as most of the expected long-term fatalities, especially those from cancer, have not yet actually occurred, and will be difficult to attribute specifically to the accident. A 2005 United Nations report attributed 56 direct deaths; 47 accident workers and 9 children with thyroid cancer, and estimated that as many as 4,000 people may ultimately die from long term accident-related illnesses.

However, this report was contradicted by a 1998 World Health Organization (WHO) report, which counted 212 dead among only 72 000 "liquidators" (of a total of approximately 600 000), and an April 2006 report by the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) (who were awarded the 1986 Nobel peace prize), which counted tens of thousands dead among the liquidators.

Chernobyl and the Bible

Because of a controversial translation of "chernobyl" as wormwood, some people believe that the Chernobyl accident was mentioned in the Bible:

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; and the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. - Revelation 8:10-11

The story appears to have spread to the West with a New York Times article by Serge Schmemann (Chernobyl Fallout: Apocalyptic Tale, July 25, 1986) in which an unnamed "prominent Russian writer" was quoted as claiming the Ukrainian word for wormwood was chernobyl.

The name of the city comes from the Ukrainian word for mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), which is chornobyl. As a result, chornobyl has been translated by some to simply mean wormwood. This translation is a matter of controversy.

Millennium Trivia:

Once again, Millennium's writers created a fictional serial killer built from real world research. The fate of Marie France Dion was directly inspired by acts committed by real life serial killer Ed Kemper. Like Henry Dion, Kemper was driven to commit his crimes by a nagging, overbearing mother. Upon beheading her on Easter Sunday in 1973, Kemper removed her larynx and forced it into a garbage disposal, precisely as Henry does during this episode's climax.

Two of the FBI Special Agents that appear in this episode, Agent Devlin and Agent Emmerich, are named for writer/producers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. The creative duo is best known for their science fiction films, including Stargate, Independence Day, and the American Godzilla.

Episode: Pilot

Type: Blooper

Description:

The Credits and Transcript for this episode refer to the stripper killed at the start of the episode as Calamity.

However, when Frank Black picks up the newspaper from his porch, the article shows in its text and under the photo that the victim was Joanne Sandor, age 27.

I imagine the newspaper prop was created before the script was finalised.

As an addition to a previous post on season 1 trivia..

Episode: The Wild and the Innocent

The name of a Ross Framo is listed in Maddie Haskel's highschool yearbook. According to IMDb he was a computer playback operator in the MM crew ( but his name does not seem to be in any of the MM end credits at all.)

Btw, Framo's name also appears in Goodbye To All That, but I'll write more about that in another post.

Thanks for this addition. I've just updated the list of trivia in this topic from the database and I'll add your latest contribution to it. Thanks! I've checked and we don't have a profile for Ross Framo, perhaps he/she was uncredited.

Here's one I happened to notice yesterday while I was watching Wide Open:

Near the end of the episode, Frank and the others hope to catch the bad man when he comes to a house that is for sale. In the front of the house there's a sign with the name of a real estate broker: Lou Bollo.

He was a stunt coordinator in the MM crew.

Hey all, did you know this?

Ricardo Clement (the name of the bad guy in Gehenna) was an alias used by the Nazi Adolf Eichmann after the war. (Apparently the last name was also sometimes written with a k instead of a c.) I had no idea until last night when I happened to watch a tv documentary about a Dutch journalist who knew Eichmann when he was hiding in Argentina.

Today I searched here, and found a thread about this from 3 years back:

https://millennium-thisiswhoweare.net/tiwwa/i...post&p=7009

From Wikipedia:

"Karl Adolf Eichmann (known as Adolf Eichmann; March 19, 1906 – May 31, 1962) was a high-ranking Nazi and SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lt. Colonel). Due to his organizational talents and ideological reliability, he was tasked by Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich to facilitate and manage the logistics of mass deportation to ghettos and extermination camps in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. He was captured by Israeli Mossad agents in Argentina, indicted by Israeli court on 15 criminal charges, including charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes. He was convicted and executed by hanging."

And more:

"At the end of World War II, Eichmann was captured by the US Army, who did not know that this man who presented himself as "Otto Eckmann" was in fact a much bigger catch. Early in 1946, he escaped from US custody and hid in various parts of Germany for a few years. In 1948 he obtained a landing permit for Argentina, but did not seek to use it immediately. At the beginning of 1950, Eichmann went to Italy, where he posed as a refugee named Ricardo Klement. With the help of a Franciscan friar who had connections with archbishop Alois Hudal, Eichmann obtained an International Committee of the Red Cross humanitarian passport and an Argentinian visa. He arrived by ship in Argentina on July 14, 1950. For the next ten years, he worked in several odd jobs in the Buenos Aires area (from factory foreman, to junior water engineer and professional rabbit farmer). Eichmann also brought his family to Argentina. Argentina was and is a haven for many former Nazis."

As a sidenote: the motto over the gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp was Arbeit macht frei, which translates quite accurately as Work will set you free - one of the slogans that Mike Atkins sees in that Gehenna storage.

a friend i met in my last chem class was a stripper. although she didn't mention how prevalent it was, it had come up one day that a good # of her co-workers went by stage names, not wanting everyone who saw them to know their real 1st names.

Guest Laurent.

I agree with Doll on this one. I never thought Calamity was her real name! In my mind it's a name for cool, outlaw comic book heroes... not real people.

Definition: Calamity: a terrible thing that happens; causing great sorrow; disaster

Are there really parents who name their child Calamity?!? Where I live we have laws to avoid any child ending up with such a name.
