hippyroo Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I found this while surfing. This is new to me and VERY interesting. What other 666 things are out there? You know how all American bar codes have 666 on them? "The Exact Location of the City of Jerusalem LATITUDE & LONGITUDE dot Latitude is shown as a horizontal line and is the angular distance, in degrees, minutes, and seconds of a point north or south of the Equator. Lines of latitude are often referred to as parallels. Longitude is shown as a vertical line and is the angular distance, in degrees, minutes, and seconds, of a point east or west of the Prime (Greenwich) Meridian. Lines of longitude are often referred to as meridians. dotDistance between Lines If you divide the circumference of the earth (approximately 25,000 miles) by 360 degrees, the distance on the earth's surface for each one degree of latitude or longitude is just over 69 miles, or 111 km. dotMinutes and Seconds For precision purposes, degrees of longitude and latitude have been divided into minutes (') and seconds ("). There are 60 minutes in each degree. Each minute is divided into 60 seconds. Seconds can be further divided into tenths, hundredths, or even thousandths. The exact center of the city of Jerusalem (Yerushalayim) is 31° 47' 00 N by 35° 13' 00 E. If we add the numbers we get: 31° 47' 00 N +35° 13' 00 E ---------------- 6 6 6 . 00 This, of course, may simply be a coincidence, but the probability of this happening is over 99,999,999 to one. Guest Moriarty Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I agree. That is an amazing find. I have read of many things attributed to 666 but never this one. Thanks for the information. Cheers!
Guest SouthernCelt Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 I found this interesting in the internet news today: US town escapes 666 phone prefix By the way, note the last sentence in the article which says: "The fear of the number 666 is known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia."
Walkabout Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 numerology is always facinating. the stuff about 911 is just as eerie!!
ethsnafu Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 I adore all things 666 which are always mighty fascinating and somewhat chilling..but... I loved the moment on a British Quiz show called 'QI' when the mighty Stephen Fry asked his collection of quizers "...what is the number of the Beast.." Of course they lept at the buzzers to answer 666 upon which he proclaimed them all wrong. Different early versions of the Book of Revelation gave different numbers, and 666 had been widely accepted as the original number. In 2005, however, a fragment of papyrus was revealed, containing the earliest known version of that part of the Book of Revelation discussing the Number of the Beast. It gave the number as 616, suggesting that this may have been the original. For centuries, people have been intrigued by the number 666, the "number of the beast" from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. Not only is it mentioned in the Bible, it has been associated with the Satanism, universal price codes and the game of roulette, as the numbers on the wheel add up to 666. Now, the legendary number is getting a fresh look, as researchers are re-examining evidence the number may actually be 616. A fragment from the Book of Revelation mentions 616 in the third line – chi, iota, sigma. In the King James Version of the Bible, the well-known verse of Revelation 13:18 reads: "Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." While many Bibles have footnotes saying the number translated from the original Greek could be 616, experts say new photographic evidence of an ancient fragment of papyrus from Revelation indeed indicates the number is indeed 616, instead of 666. Methinks we gotta rethink a few things.....
hippyroo Posted January 4, 2008 Author Posted January 4, 2008 Don't go scratching 666 in your bibles! Irenaeus in the second century, a century before the manuscript that supposedly has the correct 616, already knew of the 616 variation and discounted it as an error: "Such, then, being the state of the case, and this number being found in all the most approved and ancient copies [of the Apocalypse], and those men who saw John face to face bearing their testimony [to it]; while reason also leads us to conclude that the number of the name of the beast, [if reckoned] according to the Greek mode of calculation by the [value of] the letters contained in it, will amount to six hundred and sixty and six; that is, the number of tens shall be equal to that of the hundreds, and the number of hundreds equal to that of the units (for that number which [expresses] the digit six being adhered to throughout, indicates the recapitulations of that apostasy, taken in its full extent, which occurred at the beginning, during the intermediate periods, and which shall take place at the end), - I do not know how it is that some have erred following the ordinary mode of speech, and have vitiated the middle number in the name, deducting the amount of fifty from it, so that instead of six decads they will have it that there is but one. [i am inclined to think that this occurred through the fault of the copyists, as is wont to happen, since numbers also are expressed by letters; so that the Greek letter which expresses the number sixty was easily expanded into the letter Iota of the Greeks.]" - Adv. haer. 5.30 In this rather obscurely expressed passage, Irenaeus was proposing (even in the second century - a century BEFORE this oldest surviving copy!) that old, Greek copies of Revelation contained an error of copying in which the Greek letter xi with gematraic value 60 was wrongly copied into the Greek letter iota with number value 10.
