Complete Millennium Trivia List (Season One)

This is our full Millennium Trivia Listing that includes all trivia combined into a complete list. This complete combined list displays several groups of fact-filled information from each episode of the series. Non-episode specific trivia is allocated to Millennium's first episode, Pilot.

This is a long listing so we've broken it down into three separate lists, one for each season of Millennium.

Many of the trivia items, facts and caveats such as bloopers have been spotted by eagle eyed Millennium fans from This Is Who We Are, published in books or have been shared by other websites in particular the excellent The Millennial Abyss. If you would like to submit and share accurate trivia or content to this episode guide, please send it via the Contact Us page or via our community forums.

These take the form of visual or audible references to other 1013 shows or pokes at the television industry.

Bible References

Millennium was regularly influenced by religious and biblical themes, references and terminology. 1013 References:

The surname 'Black' comes from Chris Carter's family. The name 'Catherine' was his mother's name. It is said that Chris Carter named the main character Frank after the former lead singer of Indie/Rock band The Pixies.

Bible References:

Ezekiel 19:10

Thy mother [is] like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.

Revelation 20:14

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Revelation 21:8

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Millennium Trivia:

  • The Pilot episode of Millennium attracted over 17 million viewers when it premiered in 1996, at its time, the highest rating network premiere in history.
  • The address of the Black's new home, commonly referred to as 'the Yellow House' is the fictional address 1910 Ezekiel Drive, Seattle, WA 98924.
  • Before it was to be known as Millennium, the shows working title was 2000. The Pilot episode is sometimes referred to as 2000 or The Frenchman after Elizabeth Hand's reconstructed novel.
  • The famous Yellow House is unique in the Pilot episode. The rest of the series used a different but similar looking residence as the original neighbourhood didn't want a film crew camped outside of their homes on a semi-permanent basis. The replacement house shown in every subsequent episode appeared in the second episode of The X-Files.
  • FOX network originally wanted William Hurt to play Frank Black, but Chris Carter was adamant about Lance Henriksen playing the lead role. (Thank God!)
  • Mark Snows dark theme song for the series was inspired contrary to popular belief, by the opening of a traditional Scottish song that Chris Carter allegedly sent him by Ceilidh (pronounced Kaylee) Minogue, and not the catchy dance/pop song 'Confide in Me' by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. Ceilidh (pronounced Kaylee) is a form of traditional folk music that originated in Scotland. Visit Ceilidh Minogue's website for examples of their work.
  • The poem that the Frenchman recites to the strippers in the episode Pilot was composed by William Butler Yeats and is called The Second Coming.
  • In the opening title sequence, and in many promotional materials, the word "Millennium" was spelled with two upper-case M's (MillenniuM) The Roman numeral MM means 2000, the year which marks the turn of the Millennium. Many fans therefore spell the show as MillenniuM on the Internet.
  • Such was Chris Carter's standing with the FOX network at the time, that he was given an entire month to shoot the pilot with little or no network interference - almost unheard of indulgences for a brand new show.

Background Information and References:

Chris Carter (DVD Commentary on Pilot):

The peep-show club, which we called the Ruby Tip, was inspired by a Seattle institution which is called the Lusty Lady which is on Main Street in Seattle, which is where the pilot is set and the show is set.

You can read more about the Lusty Lady here.

A shot of the Frenchman picking up a gay man before driving away was filmed under the Lion's Gate Bridge in Vancouver. The same bridge was also used as the bridge, in the same episode, where the Frenchman drags the lifeless body of the gay man out of a car and into its trunk (boot); in this later scene, both the road running along the top of the Lion's Gate Bridge as well as the bridge's underside can be seen.

The memorable scene on the bridge where Frank Black chased the killer was filmed on Burrard Street Bridge in Vancouver, Canada.

Millennium Bloopers:

  • The sound crew added a 'starting up' car engine sound effect in post production to The Frenchman's car when it was parked by the bridge marked Peste. However the engine could already be seen to be running prior to the sound effect; as displayed by the smoking exhaust pipe. Credit: The Unofficial Millennium Companion Volume 1 by N.E.Genge
  • The Credits and Transcript for this episode refer to the stripper killed at the start of the episode as Calamity. However, when Frank Black picks up the newspaper from his porch, the article shows in its text and under the photo that the victim was Joanne Sandor, age 27. This may be a blooper, or in fact Joanne may have been using the stage name of Calamity. Credit: The Old Man

Killers and Victims:

The Frenchman killed Calamity and an unnamed male. The Frenchman was shot dead by Bob Bletcher.

Mortality Count:

Psychology:

Frank Black: The killer is confused about his sexuality. He feels guilt, quite possibly from his mother. So he goes to peep shows to try to feel something toward women but all he feels is anger – anger that fuels his psychosis, that distorts and twists his view of reality. [...] His way of dealing with [his confusion] is by fulfilling a prophecy.

Background Information and References:

Ricardo Clement (the name of the bad guy in Gehenna) was an alias used by the Nazi Adolf Eichmann after the war. (Apparently the last name was also sometimes written with a K instead of a C.)

From Wikipedia:

"Karl Adolf Eichmann (known as Adolf Eichmann; March 19, 1906 - May 31, 1962) was a high-ranking Nazi and SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lt. Colonel). Due to his organizational talents and ideological reliability, he was tasked by Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich to facilitate and manage the logistics of mass deportation to ghettos and extermination camps in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. He was captured by Israeli Mossad agents in Argentina, indicted by Israeli court on 15 criminal charges, including charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes. He was convicted and executed by hanging."

And more:

"At the end of World War II, Eichmann was captured by the US Army, who did not know that this man who presented himself as "Otto Eckmann" was in fact a much bigger catch. Early in 1946, he escaped from US custody and hid in various parts of Germany for a few years. In 1948 he obtained a landing permit for Argentina, but did not seek to use it immediately. At the beginning of 1950, Eichmann went to Italy, where he posed as a refugee named Ricardo Klement. With the help of a Franciscan friar who had connections with archbishop Alois Hudal, Eichmann obtained an International Committee of the Red Cross humanitarian passport and an Argentinian visa. He arrived by ship in Argentina on July 14, 1950. For the next ten years, he worked in several odd jobs in the Buenos Aires area (from factory foreman, to junior water engineer and professional rabbit farmer). Eichmann also brought his family to Argentina. Argentina was and is a haven for many former Nazis."

As a sidenote: the motto over the gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp was Arbeit macht frei, which translates quite accurately as Work will set you free - one of the slogans that Mike Atkins sees in that Gehenna storage.

Millennium Bloopers:

Killers and Victims:

Victims: Eedo Bolow. Thirty-nine pounds of carbonized human remains, roughly the equivalent of seven adults. 'Bob'. The deaths are drug-related, but the killer is Legion. Mike Atkins falls prey to the killer and suffers severe injuries when he is trapped inside an industrial microwave.

Mortality Count:

Psychology:

Frank to Catherine: Biblical concept of the devil's influence has lost any currency.
Catherine: Language has changed. Science and psychology has given a clearer idea of why people commit evil acts.
Frank: So the true source of evil is us. Or is there something out there – a force or a presence – waiting.

Mortality Count:

3

Psychology:

Penseyres says other Millennium Group members recommend using the Holmes criteria – defining serial killers involving three victims with a period between murders of at least 30 days.

Frank: No sexual mutilation or intercourse with the victim. He defecated and covered his feces – a physiological release but embarrassed. Covered victim's face but not entire head – objectified her, wanted as much of his obsession visible as possible but couldn't have her looking at him, couldn't hear her fear – an indication of remorse, rare to have remorse for a stranger. Expects him to visit her grave, tell her how bad he feels.

This was the first episode to be aired out of production order. The reason given was that a senior Roman Catholic prelate, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, had died November 14, 1996, the day before it was due to air and was re-scheduled out of respect. However, others think this may have been a publicity ploy by Fox to bolster Millennium's falling ratings by putting it back in the news.

The episode's title is taken from "The Ballad of the Long-Legged Bait" by Dylan Thomas. Among the quatrains included in the six-page poem is one that reads, "And steeples pierce the cloud on her shoulder / And the streets that the fisherman combed / When his long-legged flesh was a wind on fire / And his loin was like a hunting flame." The poem is known for its surrealistic metaphors concerning sex and sexuality and, as a result, the line chosen as the episode's title seems an apt means of depicting the fantasy-prone sexual mindset of serial killer Art Nesbitt.

Millennium Trivia:

Writers Glen Morgan and James Wong, like the show's other writers, clearly spent time researching the stories of real life serial killers. The conversation between Frank Black and Richard Alan Hance, which provides one of this episode's highlights, was directly inspired by famed FBI profiler Robert Ressler's interview with serial killer Edmund Kemper. Similarly, Jacob Tyler's delusions, in which he seems to believe his victims are volunteering themselves, were inspired by delusions professed by real life serial killer Herbert Mullin.

This episode marks the first occasion in the series, and one of a scant few, wherein Frank Black takes up a firearm. Both Chris Carter and Lance Henriksen were adamantly opposed to depicting Frank as a character who was willing to use guns or take the life of another person, regardless of circumstances.

The death cards seen throughout the episode serve as a means of delivering Glen Morgan and James Wong's trademark references to their work on the science fiction drama Space: Above and Beyond. Each playing card bears the insignia of Space's 58th Squadron along with their motto, "Expect no mercy." Each of the cards left by Jacob Tyler throughout the episode corresponds to the call sign of a character from that series.

At the end of the episode Frank Black shouts to Jacob Tyler, "You are not who you are!" The line is taken from The X-Files episode "Ice," also written by Morgan and Wong.

Writer Frank Spotnitz comments on Sacrament:

From worst (Weed) to best. This, as it happens, was my favorite episode of "Millennium" bearing my name. We got greater insight into Frank through the introduction of his brother, and developed aspects of Jordan's "gift" that had only been hinted at previously. I also thought the villain was creepy - I particularly like the scene in the hardware store - and the solution to the mystery sufficiently unexpected.

I was proud to screen this at the Museum of Television & Radio. Because of his skill in directing this episode, Michael Watkins went on to become co-executive producer and a director of "The X-Files" after the show relocated to Los Angeles.

While there are occasional references throughout the series to the fact that Frank Black has a brother or brothers - most notably in "Midnight of the Century" and "Seven and One" - this episode marks the only appearance of one of these blood relations. While there is foreshadowing throughout the first season, "Sacrament" grants viewers the first clear indications that Jordan Black has inherited her father's unusual powers of insight. • Lamentation contains one of the more subtle and amusing Ten-Thirteen sight gags. While Frank and Peter are discussing matters on the concrete staircase at Quantico, a strikingly familiar pair walk by them. Appearing from a distance as if they were Agents Mulder and Scully, the extras in this scene were actually David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's stand-ins from The X-Files. • It is said that Bill Smitrovich's character Bob Bletcher was written out of the series in this episode (much to the sadness of the show's fans) because of an alleged fued between Bill and Millennium's lead actor Lance Henriksen.

Millennium Trivia:

The only proper names for angels provided by Scripture are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Other angelic names can be gleaned from various apocryphal sources, however. With a name literally translating to "poison angel," Sammael is known primarily as the angel of death, characterized in some instances as a figure representing "the severity of God."

The episode takes its title from Sammael's powerful invocation, which reference four of the nine orders of angels identified by Scripture: Seraphims, Cherubims, Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, Powers, Virtues, Archangels, and Angels.

Millennium editor Chris Willingham informed the Millennium Abyss website that "Broken World" was one of those episodes that was trimmed in the cutting room as a result of its graphic nature. "There have most definitely been shots that were not used for censorship reasons. In 'Broken World,' there was a lot of slaughterhouse footage that could not be used due to its graphic nature. Watching the dailies was difficult for the editor."

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; and the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. - Revelation 8:10-11

Millennium Trivia:

The helicopter Yaponchik utilizes for his escape from the hospital rooftop is labeled on its underside with the registry number 666, the number noted in Revelation to be the mark of the Beast.

This episode's closing is unique in that it represents the only occasion, in sixty-seven episodes, that the final scene fades to white instead of black. Frank Black opens a door and steps into blinding white light and, in what is a negative inverse of the traditional closing, the executive producer credit that ends the episode appears as black text on a pure white background.

Chernobyl accident
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chernobyl accident occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). It is regarded as the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. Because there was no containment building, a plume of radioactive fallout drifted over parts of the western Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, UK, and the eastern United States. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of roughly 200,000 people. About 60% of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus.

The accident raised concerns about the safety of the Soviet nuclear power industry, slowing its expansion for a number of years, while forcing the Soviet government to become less secretive. The now-separate countries of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus have been burdened with continuing and substantial costs for decontamination and health care because of the Chernobyl accident. It is difficult to accurately tally the number of deaths caused by the events at Chernobyl, as most of the expected long-term fatalities, especially those from cancer, have not yet actually occurred, and will be difficult to attribute specifically to the accident. A 2005 United Nations report attributed 56 direct deaths; 47 accident workers and 9 children with thyroid cancer, and estimated that as many as 4,000 people may ultimately die from long term accident-related illnesses.

However, this report was contradicted by a 1998 World Health Organization (WHO) report, which counted 212 dead among only 72 000 "liquidators" (of a total of approximately 600 000), and an April 2006 report by the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) (who were awarded the 1986 Nobel peace prize), which counted tens of thousands dead among the liquidators.

Chernobyl and the Bible

Because of a controversial translation of "chernobyl" as wormwood, some people believe that the Chernobyl accident was mentioned in the Bible:

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; and the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. - Revelation 8:10-11

The story appears to have spread to the West with a New York Times article by Serge Schmemann (Chernobyl Fallout: Apocalyptic Tale, July 25, 1986) in which an unnamed "prominent Russian writer" was quoted as claiming the Ukrainian word for wormwood was chernobyl.

The name of the city comes from the Ukrainian word for mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), which is chornobyl. As a result, chornobyl has been translated by some to simply mean wormwood. This translation is a matter of controversy.

In the scene in which Frank and Peter visit the New York consulate of the Russian Federation, they're ushered into a reception room containing a fairly prominent portrait of Mikhail Gorbachev. But Gorbachev's political leadership ended with the end of the Soviet Union and communism in 1991, so the portrait should have been of then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin.

I noticed this obvious error when the episode was first broadcast in 1997, and have always wondered if it was somehow deliberate (a stylistic touch or maybe an inside joke), given that they got so many other nuances right.

Millennium Trivia:

Once again, Millennium's writers created a fictional serial killer built from real world research. The fate of Marie France Dion was directly inspired by acts committed by real life serial killer Ed Kemper. Like Henry Dion, Kemper was driven to commit his crimes by a nagging, overbearing mother. Upon beheading her on Easter Sunday in 1973, Kemper removed her larynx and forced it into a garbage disposal, precisely as Henry does during this episode's climax.

Two of the FBI Special Agents that appear in this episode, Agent Devlin and Agent Emmerich, are named for writer/producers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. The creative duo is best known for their science fiction films, including Stargate, Independence Day, and the American Godzilla.
